This led me to the idea of finding a solution for adjusting current situation in a way that it could promote body confidence and realistic standards. Even female magazines as a part of mass culture have no right to write the way they want, because they will lose lots of advertisers. It started me thinking that all women to a certain degree participate in mass culture that is imposed by media and advertisement, see false images selling certain lifestyles and are shamed into buying things. Somehow, somewhere, someone must have figured out that women will buy more things if they are kept in the self-hating, ever-failing, hungry, and sexually insecure state of being aspiring “beauties.” Personal interestįor my thesis project, I got inspired by Naomi Wolf, who in her book ‘Beauty Myth’, explored the concept of beauty as a social currency, and stated that ‘beauty myth and attainment of beauty is a new virtue that is well suited for a new consumer imperative and a new justification for economic unfairness in the workplace. īody dissatisfaction has become a global tendency, but women have higher rates of body image concern, that can result in serious mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and influence all spheres of a person’s life. ![]() Based on World Health Organization data published in 2015, 38% of 15-year-old girls and 22% of boys in Estonia think that they are too fat, although same statistics indicated that the real percentage of overweight and obese people in this age group was 9% among females and 19% among males.
